Transnistria

More formally known as the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, or Pridnestrovie, this peculiar unrecognized state broke away from Moldova in a desperate attempt to remain part of the Soviet Union as its demise drew near. Here, the clock stopped in 1991, creating a place that continues to capture western imagination as a remnant of a long bygone era.
